BIOGRAPHY
From a very young age, Isabelle Perrin developed a passion for the harp, which she studied at the Conservatoire national de région in Nice (giving her first public recital at the age of 17), and then at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. After joining the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, she became co-principal harpist to the Orchestre National de France, a position she held for nearly twenty-five years.
Alongside her solo career, Isabelle Perrin has always been deeply committed to sharing her knowledge. As the youngest French recipient of the Certificat d’Aptitude (CA) to teach the harp, which she obtained at the age of 17, she is now Professor of Harp and Head of the String Department at the Norwegian Academy of Music (Norges Musikkhøgskole) in Oslo (Norway), after having taught at the Conservatoire national de région in Nantes, France and at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris.
Her international career has led her to perform as a soloist with many prestigious ensembles, including the Northwest Sinfonietta (USA), the Symphony Orchestra of Baton Rouge (USA), the Coastal Symphony of Georgia (USA), the Orchestre Symphonique d’Oshawa-Durham (Canada), the National Symphony Orchestra (Ireland), the BBC Wales Orchestra (Wales), the Orchestre Symphonique de Bruxelles (Belgium), the Darwin Symphony Orchestra (Australia), the Polish Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra (Poland), the Soloists of Zagreb (Croatia), the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra (Russia), the Korean Chamber Orchestra (South Korea), Shanghai Chamber Orchestra (China), the Xiamen Symphony Orchestra (China), as well as many major French orchestras, including the Orchestre national de France, the Orchestre national d’Ile-de-France, the Orchestre national de Lille, the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, the Orchestre national des Pays de la Loire and the Orchestre national de Lorraine.
Her warm personality and deep connection with her instrument have inspired many composers to write for her.
Bernard Andrès dedicated to her his Danses d’Erzulie for harp, string orchestra, and percussion, premiered in Cincinnati (USA) in 2000 and performed in Europe for the first time in Amsterdam the following year. Serge Natra composed his trio Commentaires sentimentaux for flute, viola, and harp — commissioned by Radio France — for her and the Turner Trio, of which she was a founding member. Piérick Houdy, Grand Prix de Rome, wrote his Concerto Français for harp and orchestra for her; she has performed this concerto many times in France and abroad and recorded it on CD. In 2008, experimenting for the first time with the "blue harp" (electronic harp connected to a computer), Isabelle Perrin premiered South Shore, a Concertino written for her by Elzbieta Sikora, in Katowice (Poland); it has since been performed again in Taiwan and elsewhere.
Isabelle Perrin has recorded numerous albums: the first fully dedicated to the music of Bernard Andrès (at the composer’s request); a recording of harp works by Arnold Bax for flute, viola and harp with the Trio Turner; the world premiere recording on a single-action harp of works by F.A. Boieldieu, including his Sonata and his famous Concerto in C Major; a CD devoted to Pierick Houdy’s works for harp, including the “Concerto Français” written for her; a Super Audio CD of major repertoire works for the harp, including the Danses sacrée et profane by C. Debussy; an album dedicated to French Impressionist music for harp; a second CD of works by Bernard Andrès recorded in Mexico with Baltazar Juarez; and a recording of works by Johann Sebastian and Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach.
Her energy and infectious enthusiasm have led her to give masterclasses around the world: Europe, Russia, the United States, Japan, South Korea, China, Singapore, Australia, Canada, Mexico… and to be regularly invited to teach at prestigious institutions such as Indiana University (Bloomington, USA), the Moscow P.I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory (Russia), the Juilliard School (New York, USA), the Curtis Institute of Music (Philadelphia, USA), the Roosevelt University (Chicago, USA), the Conservatoire of music in Mexico City, the Central Conservatoire in Beijing (China), the Academy for the Arts in Hong Kong, the Conservatoire Tchaikovsky in Moscow (Russia), the Prague Conservatory (Czech Republic), the Conservatoire of music in Madrid (Spain), the Academy of music in San Sebastián (Spain), the Royal Conservatoire in Maastricht (Netherlands), the Mozarteum in Salzburg and the Academy for the Arts in Vienna (Austria), the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold and the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin (Germany), the Academy of music in Padoue (Italia), the Sibelius Academy of music, Helsinki (Finland), the Royal College of Music in Cardiff (Wales), the London Royal College of Music, the London Guildhall and the Royal Academy of Music in London (UK) where she served as Visiting Professor for nearly twenty years. She was also “Visiting Professor” at the Music Academy in Krakow (Poland) during the 2013-2014 academic year.
Isabelle is regularly invited as a jury member for major international harp competitions: in Hong Kong, Beijing (China), Madrid (Spain), Norrköping (Sweden), Concours Lily Laskine (France), the USA international harp competition, Bloomington (USA), among others. She also gives lectures on the relationship between French technique, French sound and French music.
Dedicated to expanding the repertoire, Isabelle Perrin also publishes with Alaw Music a collection of original – yet forgotten - or transcribed scores. These include J.S. Bach’s Suite for Lute BWV 996, F.A. Boieldieu’s Sonata, G.B. Pescetti’s Sonata, a Theme and Variations by Haydn, and a sonata by A. Corelli.
In August 2004, she organized the 6th European Harp Symposium in Lyon, France, as President and Artistic Director. She continues her involvement today as Artistic Director of the World Harp Congress (WHC), a role that involves coordinating an internationally recognized harp event every three years in a different country. The most recent edition was held in July 2022 in Cardiff, Wales, and the next will take place in July 2026 in Toronto, Canada, in collaboration with the American Harp Society under the special name of One Harp World (OHW)
In recognition of her outstanding career and musical contributions, Isabelle Perrin has been named Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, and appointed Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Isabelle Perrin se passionne, dès son plus jeune âge, pour la harpe qu’elle étudie au Conservatoire national de région de Nice (elle donnera son premier récital à l’âge de 17 ans) puis à la Julliard School de New-York avant de devenir harpiste à l’Orchestre symphonique de San Francisco puis co-soliste à l’Orchestre national de France pendant près de vingt-cinq ans.
Parallèlement à sa carrière de soliste, Isabelle Perrin a toujours été profondément attachée à la transmission de son savoir. Plus jeune diplômée française du Certificat d’Aptitude (CA) à l’enseignement de la harpe (obtenu à 17 ans), elle a enseigné au Conservatoire national de région de Nantes, puis à l’École normale de Musique de Paris avant de devenir professeur de harpe et directrice du département des cordes à la Norges Musikkhøgskole (Académie norvégienne de musique) à Oslo, Norvège, où elle enseigne actuellement.

De nombreux compositeurs ont écrit pour elle, inspirés par sa personnalité généreuse et le lien intime qu’elle noue avec son instrument. Parmi eux : Bernard Andrès lui dédie ses Danses d’Erzulie pour harpe, orchestre à cordes et percussion, dont la première mondiale a eu lieu à Cincinnati, USA, en 2000 et la première européenne à Amsterdam l’année suivante ; Serge Natra son trio pour flûte alto et harpe, intitulé « Commentaires sentimentaux » et commandé par Radio France, écrit pour elle et le Trio Turner dont elle fut le membre fondateur; Piérick Houdy, Grand Prix de Rome, son « Concerto Français » pour harpe et orchestre, qu’elle jouera à de nombreuses reprises en France et à l’étranger et qu’elle enregistrera sur CD ; Elzbieta Sikora qui compose pour elle en 2008 le Concertino « South Shore » pour harpe bleue et orchestre, expérimentant pour la première fois la harpe électronique (ici associée à un ordinateur), créé à Katowice (Pologne) et rejoué entre autres à Taïwan.
Isabelle a aussi enregistré de nombreux CDs salués par la critique, entre autres : un premier album consacré à Bernard Andrès (enregistré à la demande du compositeur); un enregistrement de pièces avec harpe d’Arnold Bax; une première mondiale sur harpe à simple mouvement d’œuvres de F.A. Boieldieu, comprenant entre autres sa Sonate et son fameux Concerto en Do Maj ; un CD dédié aux œuvres pour harpe de Piérick Houdy, parmi lesquelles le “Concerto Français”, écrit pour elle ; un enregistrement sur Super Audio CD d’œuvres du grand répertoire, avec notamment les Danses sacrée et profane de C. Debussy ; un disque consacré à la musique impressionniste française; un second CD Bernard Andrès enregistré au Mexique avec Baltazar Juarez ; ainsi qu’un CD consacré à J.S. et C.P.E.Bach.
Reconnue comme pédagogue d’exception, Isabelle est invitée à donner des masterclasses dans le monde entier : Europe, Russie, États-Unis, Japon, Corée, Chine, Singapour, Australie, Canada, Mexique. Elle est aussi membre du jury de nombreux concours internationaux (Hong Kong, Pékin, Madrid, Norrköping (Suède), Concours Laskine (France), the USA International Harp Competition, Bloomington (USA), entre autres) et donne régulièrement des conférences sur le lien entre la technique française, le son et la musique française.
Soucieuse d’élargir le répertoire pour harpe, Isabelle Perrin publie chez Alaw Music une collection de partitions originales (mais oubliées) ou encore transcrites pour la harpe, parmi lesquelles des œuvres de Bach, Boieldieu, Pescetti, Haydn et Corelli.
En 2004, elle organise la 6e édition du Symposium européen de la harpe à Lyon en tant que présidente et directrice artistique et poursuit aujourd’hui son engagement comme directrice artistique du Congrès mondial de la harpe (World Harp Congress - WHC), coordonnant un évènement international tous les 3 ans dans un pays différent, le dernier en juillet 2022 à Cardiff (Pays de Galles) et le prochain qui se tiendra en 2026 à Toronto, sous le nom de One Harp World (OHW).
Pour l’ensemble de son parcours artistique et pédagogique, Isabelle Perrin a été nommée Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres par le ministère français de la Culture, et Honorary Associate de la Royal Academy of Music à Londres.
